Content Freshness

Content freshness is how current a page’s substantive information is, including dates, prices, product facts, statistics and recommendations. Updating a date without reviewing the underlying claims does not make content fresh; engines and readers need evidence that the information remains accurate.

In plain terms

Fresh content has current facts, not merely a newly changed date.

Why it matters

AI answers can repeat stale details at scale, making factual maintenance important for both visibility and brand accuracy.

How to apply it

  • Audit time-sensitive claims on a schedule.
  • Show meaningful update dates and describe material changes.
  • Redirect or consolidate obsolete pages.

Example

A pricing comparison is revised when vendors change plans, with the old figures replaced and the methodology date updated.

Ranking is no longer enough

You need to be cited, mentioned, and recommended.

Being cited, mentioned, and recommended are three different outcomes, and most brands only ever achieve the first one. Ranking is no longer enough because AI engines answer buyers directly and name only a short list of vendors as the recommendation — everyone else is cited in passing, if at all. Get a free AI Visibility Report to see exactly where your brand appears today across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot, where competitors are winning the recommendation instead, and what's keeping you from moving up the shortlist.
