Prompt Expansion
Prompt expansion adds related terms, entities or constraints to a user’s prompt before retrieval. It helps an engine find relevant evidence when the original wording is short or ambiguous, but it can also steer results toward a narrower interpretation than the user stated.
In plain terms
The engine adds useful context to a short question before it searches.
Why it matters
A brand needs clear associations with its category, audience and use cases so it survives expanded searches.
How to apply it
- List the entities and qualifiers connected to each buyer problem.
- Use those relationships in useful sentences, not keyword lists.
- Check whether expanded searches surface the right category pages.
Example
The prompt “best AP tool” may expand to accounts payable automation, invoice processing, ERP integrations and finance-team software.

Ranking is no longer enough
You need to be cited, mentioned, and recommended.
Being cited, mentioned, and recommended are three different outcomes, and most brands only ever achieve the first one. Ranking is no longer enough because AI engines answer buyers directly and name only a short list of vendors as the recommendation — everyone else is cited in passing, if at all. Get a free AI Visibility Report to see exactly where your brand appears today across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot, where competitors are winning the recommendation instead, and what's keeping you from moving up the shortlist.
