Mention Rate
Mention rate is the percentage of measured AI responses in which a brand name appears, regardless of whether the answer links to or recommends it. It is a useful awareness baseline but a weaker commercial signal than citation frequency or recommendation rate.
In plain terms
It counts how often the brand name appears in tested AI answers.
Why it matters
A high mention rate can hide weak trust if the brand is merely listed, criticized or used as background.
How to apply it
- Count linked and unlinked mentions consistently.
- Label context as positive, neutral or negative.
- Report mention, citation and recommendation rates separately.
Example
A company appears in 18 of 50 answers but is recommended in only four, showing awareness without equivalent buyer preference.

Ranking is no longer enough
You need to be cited, mentioned, and recommended.
Being cited, mentioned, and recommended are three different outcomes, and most brands only ever achieve the first one. Ranking is no longer enough because AI engines answer buyers directly and name only a short list of vendors as the recommendation — everyone else is cited in passing, if at all. Get a free AI Visibility Report to see exactly where your brand appears today across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot, where competitors are winning the recommendation instead, and what's keeping you from moving up the shortlist.
