What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is how you win direct answers in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask, and voice assistants.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content, schema, and entities so answer engines — Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask, Copilot, and voice assistants — surface your brand as the direct answer. It is the discipline that decides whether your buyer sees your brand at the top of the SERP, or scrolls past you to a competitor.

The answer surface is the new top of the funnel
Ten years ago the top of a SERP was a paid ad and a list of ten organic links. Today, on billions of queries, the top is an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a People Also Ask cluster, or an assistant response — each of which lifts one authoritative answer and attributes it to a source.
Answer engines don't want to send the user away. They want to resolve the query on the page. When they cite you, they cite you inside their own container: their branding, their formatting, their trust. The upside is disproportionate visibility. The cost of being invisible on this surface is the same as being invisible on page one used to be.
What answer engines actually reward
AEO works because answer engines are predictable. They select sources that clearly answer a specific question, with structured markup that confirms what the page is about, from a domain the engine already recognizes as a category authority.
That means AEO is largely engineered, not stumbled into. The winning pages have question-first headings, tightly scoped answer blocks near the top of the page, supporting evidence below, and a schema layer that maps the page to a specific intent (FAQ, HowTo, Article, Product). Miss any of those and the engine reaches for a competitor.
The AEO checklist
Every page targeting an answer surface should pass this list.
- Question-first H2s and H3s that mirror natural buyer questions
- Concise answer blocks of 40–60 words directly under each question
- Supporting evidence — data, examples, comparisons — below each answer
- FAQPage, HowTo, or Article schema mapped to page intent
- Organization schema with sameAs pointing at authoritative profiles
- Consistent authorship with Person schema and an author profile page
- Third-party citations that reinforce the page's authority

AEO vs GEO
AEO targets structured answer surfaces — Overviews, snippets, PAA, voice — where an engine lifts a single authoritative response. GEO targets inclusion inside generated conversational answers on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot, where the engine synthesizes across many sources.
The two disciplines share a foundation: extractable passages and confirmed entities. But the emphasis differs. AEO leans harder on schema and precise answer blocks. GEO leans harder on entity signals and third-party citation density. Read the full comparison in GEO vs AEO vs SEO.
Common AEO mistakes
The first mistake is treating every page as an AEO page. FAQPage schema on a homepage does not help; long, discursive product pages don't win snippets. AEO is a surface-specific tactic and should be deployed on the pages whose primary job is answering a question.
The second is failing to update. Overview and snippet selection is not one-and-done. Engines rotate sources as content ages, competitors refresh, and query interpretation shifts. Every AEO win needs a refresh cadence to defend it.
The third is skipping the entity layer. Two pages with identical answer blocks will not win equally — the one whose parent brand is a confirmed entity will win almost every time.
Frequently asked
What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is the discipline of engineering content, schema, and entity signals so answer engines — AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask, and voice assistants — surface your brand as the direct answer.
Do I need FAQ schema everywhere?
No. FAQPage schema belongs on pages whose primary purpose is answering repeated buyer questions. Adding it to product or homepage templates is a common misuse that Google has been rolling back for years.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO wins organic list rankings; AEO wins the answer container above them. AEO builds on SEO fundamentals but adds a distinct layer of question-first structure, schema, and entity confirmation.
Can AEO cannibalize my SEO clicks?
It can. On some informational queries, winning the Overview reduces organic CTR because the user has their answer already. On comparison and buying-stage queries, AEO usually lifts branded and comparison-driven clicks more than it cannibalizes.
